Of English origin, from where it gets its name - Forest where the river Clun flows -  it was imported into France in the 1960s.

A hardy breed, with good meat conformation, the CLUN FOREST makes do with relatively meagre conditions: acid soils and poor climate. In the summer, in the uplands, it suffers from neither the altitude nor the rough terrain.

Grass finishing, it is accustomed to outdoor production but a short time indoors does not do it any harm. Whilst boasting good growth performance, the CLUN FOREST ewe is appreciated for its breeding qualities: easy lambing, maternal instinct, good temperament…all the qualities which make the ewe popular for crossbreeding.

The breeding programme in France is based on farm monitoring of the males and females and aims to produce animals of good conformation and good weight gain whilst retaining the maternal qualities and hardiness of the breed.

Every year, the annual ram sales feature the best rams born that year as well as 18 month old rams.

Lamb sales are managed by a reservation contract with the breeder, established by GEODE.  Lambing generally takes place in March. Reservations are possible from January onwards, owing to the fact that despite the dynamic activity of the current breeders, availability is still limited.

In extensive production, sheep farmers are rediscovering the hardy breeds and, in particular, the CLUN FOREST.
